After nearly 13 years as the Rector of the Church of the Ascension, the time has come for me to announce my retirement, which will occur in the late spring or early summer of this year. As anyone knows who has tried it, caring for an ill or disabled person can be exhausting. The physical demands are often great, and the psychological ones frequently overwhelming. Our culture tells us that no sacrifice for a loved one is too great, that caregivers must give their all — and then some more. It is an impossible situation — and then some more.
Volunteers are needed for our homeless shelter which opens in November. Please contact Mother Shelley for information if you are interested in being a volunteer. We need 3-5 people to join this beautiful ministry of Christ’s hands in the world.
The Blessing of the Animals: Please join us this Sunday, October 23rd, at 1 p.m. in our Fifth Avenue garden as we celebrate and bless those creatures of God who love us most unconditionally. All in the neighborhood are welcome.
If you are looking for opportunities to give of your time there are several volunteer openings available. We are looking for tutors for our Monday after school Tutoring Program and on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in our Food Pantry. Now at Ascension, EfM (Education for Ministry) classes will begin on September 27 in the ground floor meeting room from 6 to 8:30pm. Through scripture study, prayer and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God’s kingdom. This is accomplished by reflecting on both Christian tradition and the collective experience of the group’s members. The group will meet on
Services will return to the sanctuary from the Parish Hall on Sunday, September 11th. A time of silent meditation will take place at the side altar at 8:30 a.m. (before the 9 a.m. service). Our summer choir will be singing at the 11 a.m. service. Our Sunday School program will also return on September 11th.
