If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
— John 8:31

In the Gospel passage which precedes the lesson for today, we hear Jesus tell his disciples that he has turned his will and his life over to the care of God the Father. And then he tells us that if we follow suit, and turn our lives over to him, we will know the truth, and this truth will set us free. This freedom is also seen in our reading from Daniel, in which Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are thrown into a fiery furnace, all because they refused to worship the king’s statue. Their belief in God, which prompted the refusal to worship an idol of the king, set them free from the flames of a fierce fire. They were saved; they were set free.

If we turn our will and lives over to the care of God, we too shall be set free; free from the sting of sin and death. Turning our lives over to God frees us from our burdensome fears and needless worry. If we remain with Jesus and believe in him, we will be set free.

In this week’s newsletter, the rector notes Pentecost’s reversal of Babel—not by restoring a single language, but by enabling understanding across difference as each speaks and hears in their own tongue. She treasures hearing parishioners read “God’s deeds of power” in many languages during worship, and invites us to consider what it means to speak of God in our own heart language—whether shaped by mother tongue, place, trust, or profound shared experience. In a time of contempt for difference, Pentecost reveals the blessing of many tongues and the Holy Spirit’s gift of mutual understanding across culture, faith, and ethnic background.
