Crown of ThornsIn John 8:24, Jesus says “you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.” Jesus also says that “the One who sent Me is with Me.”

Now what does it mean to be a “believer”? And what could it mean that “you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he”?

“Believe” is an ambiguous word. Unfortunately, all too often literal assumptions are made of its meaning. The dictionary defines “believe” as having confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so.

Given this definition, I believe that the One who sent Him was with Him and that He is with us if we choose to believe in Him and follow His teachings and His Way. I have no doubt that our sins will destroy us and that we will die in our sins if we are not guided by the moral compass He has given us and the strength and courage we can realize by choosing to follow His Way.

Parish News: May 24

In this week’s newsletter, the rector notes Pentecost’s reversal of Babel—not by restoring a single language, but by enabling understanding across difference as each speaks and hears in their own tongue. She treasures hearing parishioners read “God’s deeds of power” in many languages during worship, and invites us to consider what it means to speak of God in our own heart language—whether shaped by mother tongue, place, trust, or profound shared experience. In a time of contempt for difference, Pentecost reveals the blessing of many tongues and the Holy Spirit’s gift of mutual understanding across culture, faith, and ethnic background.
