Dr. Deirdre GoodThis Sunday we will hear a sermon by Dr. Deirdre Good. She will also speak at a forum on “Hospitality and Jesus in Luke’s Gospel: Then and Now” in the Parish Hall after the 11 a.m. service and a second Sunday forum on December 13, 2015.

Deirdre Good is presently Theologian in Residence at Trinity Wall Street. She was professor of New Testament at General Seminary for 28 years. She grew up in Kenya and has written books on Matthew’s portrait of Jesus (Jesus the Meek King 1999), on Mary traditions in Judaism, Christianity and Islam (Mariam, the Magdalen and the Mother 2005), on households and families at the time of Jesus (Jesus’ Family Values, 2006) and with Bruce Chilton (Reading the New Testament: A Fortress Introduction 2010).

This week, the rector reflects on Advent’s invitation to hope when circumstances feel bleak or overwhelming. Drawing on Isaiah’s story of King Ahaz and Matthew’s account of Joseph, she explores the tension between realism and trust—between protecting ourselves from disappointment and daring to imagine what God might do. These texts challenge us to notice where cynicism or caution keeps us from hope, and to consider the risks of faithful dreaming. Advent asks whether we can trust that God is truly with us, even in the messiness and brokenness of our world.
