The Ascension Summer Book Group will meet on Monday, July 15, and Tuesday July 23. All are invited to read and discuss Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again, by Rachel Held Evans. This is a book about telling and inhabiting stories – bible stories, our own stories of faith, doubt, and wrestling for a blessing. RHE, as she is affectionately known, died earlier this year from complications of the flu at the age of 37. Her writings about her own journey of faith have been a companion, challenge and inspiration to many readers, and hopefully will be engaging for us as well. Mother Liz will lead the conversation, and we’ll meet in the Rear Parlor after the 6:00 evening Eucharist (about 6:45). The book is readily available from Amazon and elsewhere. She treasures hearing parishioners read “God’s deeds of power” in many languages during worship, and invites us to consider what it means to speak of God in our own heart language—whether shaped by mother tongue, place, trust, or profound shared experience. In a time of contempt for difference, Pentecost reveals the blessing of many tongues and the Holy Spirit’s gift of mutual understanding across culture, faith, and ethnic background.
