Today’s readings from Daniel and John reinforce one of the most basic tenets of our faith: Ye shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free (John 8:32). King Nebuchadnezzar learns the truth in the famous story of the fiery furnace (Daniel 3). At first he trusts the strength of his power to force his people to worship “the image I have made.” But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse. In faith they know their God will protect them in a fiery furnace made “seven times” more hot. When Nebuchadnezzar sees the three and a fourth (God’s angel) walking through the furnace, he accepts the truth: “Blessed be their God.” Later, in verse 29: “…for there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way.”

Lent is a time of renewal and contemplation. Throughout these days before Easter, renew my faith each day, O Lord, and renew a right spirit in me. Teach me to love thee wholeheartedly and to trust thee completely. Amen.

The tension between these two visions of power and authority plays out throughout Holy Week and history, asking where we will put our bodies, feet, and hearts as we follow Jesus’ way of vulnerable, self-giving love.
