I remember the first time we did this Lenten Devotional at Ascension. It was a new idea for all of us, so we had to drum up participation because no one had put something like this together at our church (that we or anyone could remember). A few days into Lent, I ran into John on Bleecker around 10th St. He told me that he had been offended when he got a copy of the booklet on Ash Wednesday, wondering why he hadn't been asked to write something. After all, he said he finally complained to a few people after burning on this resentment for a few days, "wasn't his contribution just as worthwhile? Were they afraid he'd write something to offend everyone?" Finally, he said Garrett turned to him and said, "Oh, you a******, they've been up there during the announcements every Sunday begging people to sign up!"

I love that he told this story on himself. Not only did it acknowledge our shared "appreciation" for how congregational dynamics, shall we say, so often work, but reminds me now of how he could be both funny and self-effacing at the same time. That was 15 years ago, at a time I was still too fearful to be myself or even admit who I was to myself. Throughout his 40s and 50s, John continued to make me laugh at the limits of self-absorption and to demonstrate how much more liberating and powerful self-awareness can be than self-justification.

Thank you for the Vespers service I attended Monday night. It was so calming to return to Ascension. I attended for several years when Pastor Donald Goodness was there, and came there because I'd met a kind and caring person...John Laubach. It was ironic that he has brought me back to your church again, and again has made it possible for me to feel welcome yet again! I hope that I will be able to attend the celebrations of his life when they have been organized. I will continue to look on this site, thank you Janet.

Interesting comments. I recall Dr. Detar fondly as I was a student of his in the 60's
when AEolian-Skinner's were being replaced- right and left- throughout Manhattan.
Was Sorry to see Ascension's go\; If my memory serves me correctly Kennedy was
Rector then, George Meade was at Trinity, and Bill Self was at St. Thomas......
Time flies. Best regards!

On a date (not remembered, during 1950-52 while a student at Union Seminary) I played timpani for Vernon deTar on a major work, also not remembered. My wife and I will be in Manhattan on October 23 to celebrate our 67th wedding anniversary, so we want to worship with you to bring back many memories of past years. Peace. Paul Marion.

Sir Edwin (Jimmy) Manton was my uncle, my daughter is a church organist (organ scholar at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, England). I am thrilled to learn of this wonderful gift to the Church of the Ascension and should appreciate information on concerts/recitals/special services etc.
Thank you,
Kristin Barton

@Joel: Sorry, don't know what happened that the music list wasn't updated this week. I realize we're merely an hour and a half away from the service, but the list is there, over on the right, now.
@Michael: I'll ask that your name be added to our email mailing list, so that you should get (most weeks) the music for the upcoming Sunday -- and hopefully we'll get better at keeping the list on the right updated anyway!
